JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation said it will open two new lanes on Monday as part of the I-95/I-295 North interchange improvement project.
Residents said they avoid driving that stretch because it can be confusing.
The project was started in 2016 to help improve traffic flow, safety and increase the capacity of a growing area.
It was delayed several years due to supply chain hold-ups and material shortages.
The latest delay is due to the addition of a new construction phase.
Florida Department of Transportation said two new lanes will open on I-95 between Cole Road and just north of Broward River.
I-95 will feature six northbound lanes through the interchange, a dedicated lane for motorists heading south on I-95 from Airport Road and accessing the I-295 eastbound flyover, and multiple exit ramps and on-ramps to flow traffic through the interchange.
Hampton Ray with the FDOT said it added additional safety improvements, including LED lighting that were not part of the original plan.
People who did not want to be identified said they appreciate FDOT trying to make it safer, but they don’t want more delays.
