JSO identifies man who died at hospital after Northside shooting

Deadly shooting reported on Jacksonville's Northside (WJXT)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office identified a man who died at the hospital after a shooting on Jacksonville’s Northside on May 24.

The man was identified as 41-year-old Byron W. Walker.

Sgt. Steve Rudlaff with the JSO Homicide Unit said officers were called to Maidstone Cove Drive, just north of the Trout River off Lem Turner Road, around 9:45 p.m. Thursday because of a report that someone had been shot.

When they arrived, they found Walker with multiple gunshot wounds. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue personnel responded and took him to the hospital, where he died.

Investigators said a person has been detained and is being questioned at JSO headquarters downtown.

Rudlaff said they don’t know the circumstances of the shooting or the relationships of those involved, but they are continuing to investigate.

Rudlaff said investigators believe it is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.
