Jacksonville family of 5 loses home to fire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Tuesday morning house fire on Beaver Run Drive left a family of five with nowhere to live.

The fire happened in East Arlington near Kernan Boulevard. Neighbors captured the flames on cellphone video.

We’ve learned the Perkins family lived in the home. Everyone made it out safely.

JFRD Lt. Nicholas Vihrachoff suffered minor injuries.

“It got a little hot. I knew we were in a position we needed to be, and my ears got burned up,” he said. “I had all of my protective equipment on. I did everything I was supposed to do. It’s the risk of the job and it happens sometimes.”

JFRD Chief Keith Powers pointed out that temperatures in the ceiling in a house fire can exceed 1,000 degrees.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The Perkins family will have a long road ahead to recover and friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help them.
