JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A construction worker was killed Tuesday night after becoming trapped under a construction vehicle that was accidentally driven into a retention pond, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Around 7 p.m., construction crew members were working on leveling the ground at a clubhouse at the Glen Kernan Golf and Country Club on Glen Kernan Parkway.

They searched for the Bobcat Skid Steer — which police said was similar to a small excavator used to push dirt around — because they did not hear it making noise. JSO said the workers noticed it was in the water and called emergency officials.

According to JSO, the man, believed to be between 20 to 25 years old, accidentally drove the Bobcat machine into the pond around the golf course and became trapped undeath it.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue took the man to the hospital, where he died.

It’s unclear how long he was underwater and the circumstances are unknown.

Police believe this is an accidental incident, but an investigation is pending.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating.
