With temperatures rising, here are some unusual ways to keep cool

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As temperatures ramp up, there are a few unusual options that could keep you cool.

Degree Wellness is a Jacksonville business that offers cryotherapy, a therapy that utilizes cold temperatures inside a chamber.

“There are so many benefits of cryotherapy. A lot of people associate it with physical recovery. It is amazing for that post-workout, feel better and reduce some of that muscle soreness and inflammation,” Degree Wellness owner Amanda Lightcap said.

Lightcap said cryotherapy can also benefit people trying to find relief from the scorching temperatures.

“It helps drop your core body so when you get back out you will feel more refreshed than you felt all day long,” Lightcap said.

Someone using cryotherapy could burn hundreds of calories during the three-minute treatment.

News4JAX tested the treatment. The temperature dropped to -220 degrees for three minutes.

“I am officially a human popsicle, but I feel great,” News4JAX reporter Erik Avanier said.

Another option to cool off from the extreme heat is cold plunge therapy, which includes a 3- to 5-minute dip in 45-degree water.

This type of therapy helps with inflammation, stress reduction and muscle recovery.

“You do get the core body temperature drop with the cold plunge like the cryotherapy and it has a lasting effect. So you will see the benefits over the next four to six hours,” Lightcap said.

A cooling vest is another option to stay cool and could be good for someone who works in the heat. It can be kept in the freezer until it’s time for use. Other vests have ice packs that can be inserted into the vest also.
