Historic St. Augustine cathedral to undergo $4 million renovation after years of delays

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine will undergo a $4 million renovation project after years of delays.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the project aims to modernize the historic rectory to ensure safety and efficiency for those who serve its community of parishioners and tourists.

For nearly 60 years, the 14,000-square-foot rectory has housed many priests.

The project was delayed for many years due to financial reasons and other maintenance priorities.

With critical repairs needed, resident Father John Tetlow has taken action.

“I cannot, in good faith, ignore the urgency of this project any longer,” Tetlow said. “These renovations need to happen now while we can address them proactively.”

Much of the budget addresses the original 1965 electrical, plumbing, windows, and HVAC issues that have caused leaks and air-quality problems.

The floor plan will be reconfigured to separate the priest’s living quarters from the parish office and ministry spaces.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early July and is expected to last eight months.

“This project is in keeping with the Cathedral’s rich history and significant role within the diocese,” Tetlow said. “It also honors the legacy of generations of parishioners and priests who selflessly dedicated themselves to the growth of the church in Florida.”
