JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that will designate portions of State Road A1A, which runs from Key West to Northeast Florida, as the “Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.”
Musician Jimmy Buffett died at the age of 76 last year after a battle with a rare form of cancer.

Buffett conjured an easygoing, sand-between-the-toes lifestyle in songs such as “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” and “Margaritaville.” He built the latter into a brand that encompassed restaurants, clothing, casinos and more and has millions of fans.
And he has a special connection to Florida.
“There was no such place as Margaritaville,” Buffett told the Arizona Republic in 2021. “It was a made-up place in my mind, basically made up about my experiences in Key West and having to leave Key West and go on the road to work and then come back and spend time by the beach.”
Under the newly enacted law, the highway designation will stretch through the following counties:
- Monroe
- Miami-Dade
- Broward
- Palm Beach
- Martin
- St. Lucie
- Indian River
- Brevard
- Volusia
- Flagler
- St. Johns
- Duval
- Nassau
The Florida Department of Transportation will be required to set up markers for the highway by Aug. 30.
Another bill will introduce a new slew of Buffett specialty license plates for drivers.
