All eyes are watching what happens with President Joe Biden and his campaign as at least one congressional Democrat has called on him to step aside following last week’s debate performance.
Democrat congressman out of Texas, Lloyd Doggett, wrote, “There’s a large and increasing group of House Democrats concerned about the president’s candidacy, representing a broad swath of a caucus.”
Then, there was a headline from the Washington Post, “Obama shares concerns after shaky debate.”
Now the question is whether President Joe Biden can survive these calls to leave the ticket.
The White House Press Secretary spent Wednesday afternoon saying President Biden will not step out of the race.
“He talked about it, he owned that the debate was not his best night. He did that saying it was not an excuse but an explanation. I was standing here, many people were asking why and what was the explanation and that’s what you heard from him,” Karine Jean-Pierre said.
When asked if President Biden is stepping down, she replied, “Absolutely not. And you heard, I believe, directly from the campaign as well.”
Rick Mullaney is the News4JAX Political Analyst and Director of the Public Policy Institute at Jacksonville University.
He thinks Americans will watch closely as President Biden has a sit down interview this week with ABC News.
“Biden kind of wants to show he can be pushed. I do think they’ll be watching the questions. We’ll see what kind of questions he gets. I’m sure there will be opportunities for the president to speak well and address issues, but I also expect questions that will be more challenging and push the president,” Mullaney said.
Voters we spoke with have strong opinions.
“I will take Joe Biden slobbering in a geriatric wheelchair before I vote for Donald Trump...jus sayin’,” voter Ray Kennedy said.
“I mean he’s old. He’s getting up there doing his job, but it’s time for Kamala to come on and step up,” voter Rayna Watson said.
Meantime, former President Donald Trump hasn’t said much about this subject as it’s all been playing out on the Democratic side.
