Worker at fireworks tent shot when he tried to stop robbery, police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man in his 60s who was working at a fireworks tent near St. Augustine Road was shot late Thursday night when he tried to stop a robbery, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Officers were called to a reported shooting at Dupont Avenue and St. Augustine Road around 11 p.m. Thursday. They found the man shot in the torso.

He was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Investigators said they learned that the man confronted a robber while working at the fireworks tent and “a handgun was discharged.”

The robber grabbed the cash register and ran from the scene.

Another employee who was there at the time wasn’t hurt.

Police said they did not have a description of the suspect.

“Your assistance is crucial in this ongoing investigation,” police said.
