City ordinance allows alcoholic beverages on the Jacksonville Riverwalk in designated areas

The ordinance went into effect on July 1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A city ordinance now allows people ages 21 and older to drink alcoholic beverages on the Jacksonville Riverwalk in the designated container areas.

The idea came about after members of the JAX Chamber leadership experienced a Specialty Center in Tampa.

Certain businesses along and adjacent to the Riverwalks can have customers leave their business with a drink during certain hours.

The beverage must be served in a Riverwalk to-go cup and people are allowed a maximum of two cups at a time.

Visitors cannot bring their own alcohol onto the Riverwalk as it must come from one of the participating businesses.

One couple said this is a good way to get more people downtown.

“For me, I think it’s another nice step...I think this is a great next step,” Bart and Kim Straughn said.

Michael Flaukner was visiting the Riverwalk for his birthday.

“Actually I’m from North Carolina, it’s my birthday weekend so yeah I would like to enjoy myself, especially as a tourist,” Flaukner said.

Some of the places you can purchase drinks from are:

  • Chart House
  • DoubleTree by Hilton: St. Johns Provision Co. and Lounge
  • Hyatt Regency: SHOR Seafood Grill & TAVERN
  • Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts (during events)
  • Morton’s The Steakhouse
  • Riverside Arts Market (during select events)
  • Southbank Hotel: Southbank Johnnie’s

The program is available from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
