Hundreds unleash their inner superhero during First Coast Comic Con at UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Comic book fans got to unleash their inner superhero Saturday at First Coast Comic Con.

For the first time, the event was held at the University of North Florida with artists and other special guests showcasing some of their work.

From Star Wars to Marvel, and everything in between.

“We’re here today to celebrate comics and all the related fandoms that involve the media,” Co-promoter Michael Taylor said.

First Coast Comic Con brought out the region’s hype for superheroes.

“I think it’s very important to have it in Jacksonville the comic community in Jacksonville. It kind of feels neglected sometimes because there’s no big comic book show for collectors and even pop culture collectors,” Co-promoter Denny Courson said.

Hundreds of people flooded the university center at UNF campus, and many of them dressed as their favorite characters, moving around looking for toys and comics.

Some of the people News4JAX spoke with just came looking for a reason to be with the people they love.

Chris Munoz came with his three little ones.

“Because I’m the Batman!” King, Chris’ 6-year-old son, said.

Munoz described this experience as “exciting.”

“It’s fun for me because it also gives us activities. We can do together a lot of the stuff that I’ve been into there too and vice versa so it’s a fun household,” Munoz said.

Chris said they’ve been coming to events like these for about two years.

The goal for Saturday was to find King something related to Miles Morales’s Spiderman.

“It’s very important. It’s important to have stuff to do with your family, especially outside of home these activities get the kids excited get the blood pumping and hopefully by the time we get them home, they’ll be tired out and go take a nap,” Munoz said.

Now Munoz gets to pass along his passion to the next generation.

“Oh man, pretty much all my life since I can remember picking up my first comic book, probably at six years old so ever since then and I’m 41 now,” Munoz said.

Creating memories they will never forget.

Organizers said it took almost a year to get the event together.

They already said they hope to have an even bigger and better setup next year.
