City of Jacksonville activates heat emergency plan after 3rd straight day with Heat Advisory

Heat Advisory: Feels-like temps to reach 109° in northeast Florida, 111° in southeast Georgia

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The city of Jacksonville activated its heat emergency plan on July 16, which was the third day in a row the city saw a Heat Advisory.

Heat Advisories are issued when the maximum heat index is expected to be between 108°F and 112°F.

The heat emergency plan activates the city’s cooling centers, which include:

  • All COJ Public Libraries
  • COJ Community Centers
  • COJ Pools and Splash Pads

These facilities will operate during their typical hours.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is also offering free transportation to cooling centers because of the heat emergency day.

Just tell the bus driver that you are traveling to a cooling center to receive free fare.

The city said the free rides keep transportation from being a barrier to accessing the cooling centers and keep more members of the community safe and cool.
