JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Duval County School Board is making changes to its school bus policy just weeks ahead of the start of the upcoming school year.

The policy update states that middle and high school students who live under two miles from their assigned schools will not be able to ride the school bus for transportation.

In previous years, the limit was a mile and a half.

The allowable distance from the bus stop to a student’s primary residence is also extended by a half mile, meaning students may have to walk a half mile longer to home.

The district said the changes are implemented to align with state law.

DCPS estimated nearly 1,100 students would be affected by this rule, and impacted families will be notified directly.

The district urges parents and guardians to register their students as soon as possible to receive eligibility status and bus stop locations.

School starts on August 12.
