News4JAX political analyst discusses key points of Biden’s Oval Office address

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Saying he reveres the office but loves his country more, President Biden gave what some may have been one of the most important speeches of his political career Wednesday night.

With his family by his side in the Oval Office, the president addressed the nation for the first time since announcing his decision to end his re-election campaign. He framed the decision as a defense of democracy.

News4JAX Political Analyst and Head of the Jacksonville Public Policy Institute Rick Mullaney joined News4JAX Anchor Bruce Hamilton on the Morning Show Thursday to talk about some of the key points of Biden’s speech.

They also discussed it being the first chance for Biden to make a case for his legacy and framing his decision to bow out of the race and what lies ahead. Also, we discussed why he had to make sure it didn’t sound like a farewell speech — more like a there’s more to be done speech.

And, no matter how frustrated he may be at being pushed aside by the Democratic party – and he is no doubt pretty upset – he has too much at stake to simply wash his hands off the election.
