Newly formed group aims to fight for the LGBTQ+ community and be politically active

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A newly formed group in Duval County aims to advocate for members of the LGBTQ+ community and fight for their rights.

Duval Democratic Spectrum Caucus, which was founded by Dr. Stanley McAllister, also plans to be active in the political space.

This election cycle the group endorsed a few candidates.

“Well it’s important because often times when the public is voting they don’t do a lot of research,” Regina Jackson the Vice President of the organization said. “So we’ll put a stamp on them like ‘hey they understand our fight, they’re okay they understand marginalized and disenfranchised communities.’ And so this candidate is one we can put in place and really have our voice be heard.”

Endorsing certain candidates who are already aligned with LGBTQ+ rights or are willing to, is something Alexis Williams, the deputy director of Queer Trans Project, said is a good idea.

“Any organization that informs voters about candidates who support LGBTQ+ issues, they’re extremely vital,” Williams said.

She also added this group will benefit the whole community.

“An organization like this can really help advance equal rights,” Williams said. “This goes beyond LGBTQ people this is an accepting environment for all marginalized communities.”

Jackson said Duval Democratic Spectrum Caucus is unlike any other group in the area, but says to stick around, they plan to embed themselves in the community.

“We see this as a really strong force in the future and we believe that this caucus is going to be a very powerful caucus.
