Right before early voting began in St. Johns County, fake guides were mailed to voters.

Jerry Holland said the fake campaign guides have been an issue that his office is seeing this election.

“Now what people are doing is taking the exact same information and putting their own choices on there,” Holland said. “And you don’t know really is it from the source that it says on above?”

Holland said it’s difficult to tell the difference between the real voter guides and the fake ones.

“It’s very difficult because they’re using the exact form,” Holland said. “They’re just changing the information on there. You almost have to in one way, I think question the person giving it to you. Can you give me your name and telephone number because what you need to find out is this the real information and who’s given an out.”

Guides like former Congresswoman Corrine Brown’s Quick Picks have been duplicated.

“Most of the time, these things are handed out at the polls, and they’re not from the Supervisor of Elections,” Holland said. “And they’re also campaigning outside the area, which they’re allowed to do, which is 150 feet from the entrance of the polling location.”

He added that they are legally campaigning properly, but they may be giving information that’s not truly the sponsor’s information.

He said once people cast their vote, they won’t get another opportunity until the next election and urged people to research each candidate on their own.

Brown will hold a press conference to discuss the legal action she’s taking on her Quick Picks voter guide being duplicated.
