Jacksonville Housing Authority gets new leadership

Roslyn Mixon-Phillips has been voted unanimously as the next interim CEO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.Jacksonville Housing Authority has selected a new interim CEO, she could begin working on Thursday.

Former JHA board member, Roslyn Mixon-Phillips has been tapped to lead the agency until a permanent CEO is found.

Roslyn Mixon-Phillips could lead the Housing Authority as soon as this week, though her position is temporary she could make some major changes while she’s there.

After months of turmoil, the Jacksonville Housing Authority said it’s getting back on track.

“(We are) very excited to have been able to vote as a board to approve Ms. Rosyln Mixon-Phillips coming in as an interim CEO, said Heather Horovitz, the current Jacksonville Housing Authority Chair.

They hope the former board member will make JHA better.

“I think that one thing that she really brings that I am excited about is a great temperament and a lot of respect for this agency and what this agency does for the residents and for the people of Jacksonville,” Horovitz said.

Horovitz said she’s worked with the city, HUD and other leadership in the past. Mixon-Phillips may be the answer for the many tenants and people looking for housing as the agency works on multiple projects.

Jacksonville Housing Agency is optimistic about the future after a challenging 12 months.

TIMELINE

Former JHA CEO Dwayne Alexander resigned in January under scrutiny.

The city’s inspector general found under his leadership, $2 million of “wasted” funds as families spent less than 15% of that money on utility bills, which the federal funds were intended for.

Following his departure, acting CEO Vanessa Dunn was appointed. She only served for six months before she resigned amid allegations of unfounded unethical and abusive behavior.

“She acknowledges that there is change to be made and we welcome that change and we ask if there is any senior leadership changes that she will engage the board in those discussions,” said Horovitz.

Horovitz adds that Mixon-Phillips will have full power to make whatever changes are necessary to get the housing authority back on track.
