Half of the country’s most hurricane-vulnerable counties are in two states: Florida and South Carolina.
It’s not surprising that the Sunshine State is on that list, which was created by researchers from Penn State University, NOAA and LSU.
They looked at several factors, including hurricane risk assessments and anticipated financial loss from hurricanes according to FEMA.
They also took into account the past 10 years of storms and access to national disaster debris recovery facilities.
According to the data, Broward County ranked as the most at risk, followed by Palm Beach County, Charleston County (South Carolina) Miami-Dade County and Horry County (South Carolina).
In Northeast Florida, Duval ranked as the highest risk, at No. 47, followed by St. Johns County at No. 57.
Only three other Northeast Florida counties ranked in the top 100: Putnam County at No. 90, Clay County at No. 91 and Alachua County at No. 100.
