Columbia County officials worked with the Florida Department of Emergency Management to request treatment of the area after requests from citizens and County Commissioners to help control the mosquitoes.
Airplanes will release a very small amount of insecticide to kill mosquito larvae and adult mosquitoes.
Officials said during treatment, only about one ounce (two tablespoons) of insecticide is used per acre (average football field size).
Officials said residents don’t need to do anything to prepare for the treatment and there is no health risk for people or pets.
Since mosquitoes lay eggs near water, residents should tightly cover water storage containers like buckets, cisterns and rain barrels.
Use wire mesh with small holes for containers without lids.
Fill tree holes to prevent them from filling with water.
Once a week, empty, clean and cover items that hold water like tires, toys, pools, flowerpot saucers, trash containers, etc.
Officials also recommended checking your septic tank for cracks and gaps and covering open vents or plumbing pipes.
