‘We just want to understand why’: Family looking for answers after loved ones’ graves were vandalized

The destruction was also shared on social media

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two mothers are filled with many emotions after someone vandalized their sons’ graves and recorded the act on camera.

Multiple videos circulated on social media Sunday of a person vandalizing Darryl Lundy Jr. and Dari’one Flanigan’s gravesites.

Lundy and Flanigan are cousins who were both killed by gun violence just a few years apart.

Flanigan’s mother, Vonette Nixon, said she got a call about a post regarding her son and nephew.

“Upon seeing the video, it was a young man urinating on the headstone, as well as, as you can see, messing up the bench, as well as cracking it up, beating it up,” Nixon said.

Nixon said their family was disappointed and sad to see this happen.

“They have family that really love them, and it’s been three years and five years, and we already deal with not having justice, and then now we have to endure this, and it just basically brings back up wounds that haven’t even healed yet,” Nixon said. “This is supposed to be a resting and peaceful place, and for someone to come out here and just disrespect their resting place, I mean, it’s just, it’s unbelievable; it’s deplorable, like I just don’t understand what decent human being would even do something like this, and even the mere fact that they decided to even urinate on their headstones, that’s just so distasteful and disrespectful.”

The families are searching for answers as to who did this and why they would target their sons.
