Moncrief Springs residents frustrated while dealing with flooding from heavy rain

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two nights of rain led to flooding and plenty of frustration for residents in Moncrief Springs on Saturday.

Clarissa Thomas said this wasn’t an ideal start to her Saturday morning.

She said flood water was inside her house and it hasn’t been that bad since Hurricane Irma in 2017.

“I am thinking that we need help,” Thomas said. “This hasn’t just happened before, it looks like they would’ve tried to do something. I know that they tell you that you have to keep calling and calling and calling.”

Thomas isn’t alone as others who live in that part of Moncrief Springs, not too far from Lem Turner Road, said they aren’t happy dealing with flooding consistently.

Mary Davis said they aren’t even in a flood zone.

“We have septic tanks in this area,” Davis said. “This part of Fernandina Avenue, we have problems with the toilet flushing because of the yards full of water.”

She went on to describe her frustrations.

“I am frustrated,” Davis said. The city will work in other neighborhoods, but we can hardly get anything done in ours. I think that is ridiculous. We pay taxes like everybody else.”

They said they reached out to the city for help to find out why this keeps happening.

Thomas said she believed the city fixed a drainage problem back in 2017, but this kind of sight didn’t go away.

They said this is one of the worst experiences they’ve seen in a while.

Even city public works employees came out to try and get the water to recede.

They said a drainage problem from several blocks away caused the flooding in the area.

Workers said they found trash and other debris in ditches, which then clogs the drains during heavy rain.

People said they’ve used the MyJax website to report flooding problems.

News4JAX reached out to the city of Jacksonville about what work can be done to fix the flooding in that neighborhood and is waiting for a response.
