JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Buying secondhand clothes can be useful for cutting back on our waste, and there’s a new movement in America to do just that.

Sunday is National Secondhand Wardrobe Day, a day meant to encourage deals and savings at secondhand and consignment stores.

Buying econdhand clothing is a great way to save money. Oftentimes, the clothes can be in great condition and if you take your time, you may even find designer items. Sometimes, even the quality of secondhand clothing can be better than other retailers.

Another important reason for buying secondhand is to conserve the earth’s resources. Tons of clothing every year is dumped in landfills. As a result, buying new clothing because it’s no longer trendy can be very wasteful.

Before the Industrial Revolution, clothing was expensive and not as easily disposable. After the revolution, people began buying new clothing and tossing out old ones. Thus beginning, the stigma attached to secondhand clothing.
