Jacksonville NAACP to commemorate 64 years since Ax Handle Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Youth Council of the NAACP will commemorate the 64th anniversary of the 1960 Sit-Ins and Ax Handle Saturday on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Oakland.

On Aug. 27, 1960, a mob of white men with axes and bats attacked Black people after a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter in downtown Jacksonville.

Charlie Cobb Jr. will be the speaker at the event. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement and the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

The commemoration will take place from 6-8 p.m Saturday at First Baptist Church of Oakland Out-East at 1025 Jessie St. Jacksonville, FL 32206.
