GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – Walnut Street is now open with new and improved accessibility for motorists and pedestrians.
The unveiling marks the end of phase one of a redevelopment plan for the street.

Construction began in February and was part of Green Cove Springs’ goal of enhancing city infrastructure. The project included roadway reconstruction, new sidewalks, improved drainage systems, new landscaping and updated street lighting.

“The transformation of historic Walnut Street marks a pivotal moment for Green Cove Springs,” Assistant City Manager Mike Null said in a news release. “These enhancements will not only improve traffic flow but also significantly boost the safety and visual appeal of our downtown area, making it a more inviting space for everyone.”
The phase one improvements cost more than $3 million and was funded by the American Rescue Plan Act and tax revenue funds from the 2023 fiscal year and 2024 city budget.
Some of the improvements include:
Palmetto Avenue to Orange Avenue
- Two 10-foot-wide driving lanes
- 8-foot parallel parking lane on the north side
- 15-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides
- Improved landscaping and lighting
- Removable bollards at both ends
- Outlined crosswalk
Orange Avenue to Magnolia Avenue:
- 15-foot sidewalk from Clay Theatre to the curb
- Replacement of existing sidewalks and curbs at the corner of Walnut Street and Orange Avenue
- Reconstruction of the brick roadway to provide two 10-foot driving lanes
- Improved landscaping and lighting
The city is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the street on Saturday, Sept. 21 at noon.
The ceremony will be on the corner of US 17 and Orange Ave. in front of Clay Theatre.
