St. Johns County student facing felony charges for making ‘high risk’ school shooting threats

ST AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 12-year-old Sebastian Middle School student was arrested on felony charges following an investigation with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office about threats made to conduct a school shooting.

SJSO received a tip through the FortifyFL app that said the student made comments about harming other students.

The student’s threats were marked as “high risk” after the deputies completed a threat assessment on the student. The assessment involved evaluating the history of the student, behavior issues, interviews, family, and home environment.

Deputies decided to arrest the student out of concern for the safety of other students and staff.

The FortifyFL app was created following the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb. 14, 2018. The app allows electronic tips to be sent immediately to law enforcement and school staff.
