CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Clay County officials are preparing for what will become Hurricane Helene as it is expected to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle on Thursday.
Officials said they expect the fast-moving storm to be more of a wind event and not a flooding event.

There is potential for tornadoes along the St. Johns River and officials said they expect to see downed trees, power lines and debris.
Residents who live in mobile homes, RVs, and older homes to relocate.
Shelters: Five shelters will open Wednesday at 6:00 PM: Orange Park High (Pet friendly) Keystone Elementary (Pet friendly) Lake Asbury Junior High (Special needs shelter) Clay High School Wilkinson Elementary Curbside garbage collection: There is a strong possibility that curbside garbage collection will be canceled on Thursday and possibly Friday.
Sandbags (limited to 10 per person) will be distributed at the Clay County Fairgrounds on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Bags are first come, first serve at a limited supply and the county will refill the sites as needed.
You will have to fill up your own bags and bring your own shovel.
All Clay County Board of County Commissioners offices will close at noon on Wednesday through Friday.
All Clay County District Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday.
A call center at 1-877-252-9362 will be available for any questions our residents have on Wednesday at 7 a.m. It will remain open until the storm has left Clay County or until further notice.
