POMONA PARK, Fla. – A man was killed Thursday evening in a shootout with Putnam County law enforcement after he barricaded himself inside a home during a botched burglary attempt, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said that around 6 p.m. Thursday, they responded to a burglary in progress at a home on East Main Street in Pomona Park.

Neighbors told deputies they heard gunshots before law enforcement arrived, so SWAT personnel were called to the scene because the burglary suspect had barricaded himself inside the home and was possibly armed, deputies said.

Deputies said they tried several times to get the man to surrender, but around 9:30 p.m. shots were fired at the deputies from inside the home.

Deputies returned fire, and after the shootout, the man was found dead inside the house.

The Sheriff’s Office said there is no additional information at this time but an update will be shared on Friday.

Per Sheriff’s Office policy, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was notified and is investigating the incident.
