ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – The St. Johns County Emergency Management Department is asking the public for help in documenting damage left behind by Hurricane Helene.
On Friday, officials rolled out an online survey that residents can fill out until Oct. 4.

According to the county, the information from that survey will be used to help them collect isolated impacts that may have happened after Helene. That information may also be provided to other state and federal agencies as they assess the damage.

Officials pointed out the damage assessment survey is not an application for local, state or federal disaster assistance or to make an insurance claim.
St. Johns County officials also urged the public to save sandbags that did not come in contact with floodwater since they may be useful for future storms.
The public may dispose of any unwanted sand by scattering it in the yard. However, sandbags that came into contact with floodwater may be contaminated with harmful bacteria and should be discarded at the Tillman Ridge or Stratton Road transfer stations.
This service is free of charge for residents at the following locations.
- Stratton Road Transfer Station: 250 N. Stratton Rd., St. Augustine
- Tillman Ridge Transfer Station: 3005 Allen Nease Rd., Elkton
Transfer Station Hours:
- Monday – Friday: 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
- Saturday: 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Residents are asked not to dispose of sandbags in the regular trash. It is also important not to mix sandbags with yard debris, as the sand is abrasive and can damage equipment used to grind yard debris into mulch, officials said.
