JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A teen died Wednesday two days after she was struck in a hit-and-run crash on Blanding Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
JSO said it learned about 17-year-old Alaysha Williams’ death late Wednesday afternoon. She was a senior and multi-sport athlete at Edward White High School.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the teen was crossing Blanding Blvd., near the intersection with Confederate Point Road, when she was struck by a white car.
According to police, after hitting the teen, the driver pulled into a parking lot south of the crash scene to check for damages to the car, inspected it and then continued driving south on Blanding Blvd.
AJ Jordan with MAD DADS said this incident hits close to his heart.
“I have a 16-year-old daughter and just for that person, just to get out of that car, check the damage on her car, but not go and check on that child. It’s just it’s really no words to express the anger that I feel as a father. The anger our community feels. The anger that the Sheriff’s Department feels right now. For somebody just to care more about a car than a young lady laying there in the street,” Jordan said.
The teen was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
According to JSO, the suspect car is believed to be a white Toyota Yaris or a similar vehicle.
The woman pictured in the release is believed to be the driver.
Jordan shared a message to the driver responsible for the incident.
“Do the right thing. Take accountability for what you did. It could have just been an accident, but when you left the scene, you made it a criminal act,” Jordan said. “Now it’s a criminal act with a death involved. Do the right thing, come forward, turn yourself in and help this family move towards some closure, which they never would have closure, but you need to be held accountable.”
