Multiple tornadoes touch down in South Florida before Hurricane Milton makes landfall

More tornadoes are likely across parts of central and southern Florida through the night

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Among the catastrophic threat of pounding rains, severe flooding, life-threatening storm surges and strong winds, lies the additional possibility of tornadoes spinning off from Hurricane Milton.

The National Hurricane Center said Florida was already seeing tornadic supercells sweep through Wednesday afternoon, and more tornadoes are likely across parts of central and southern Florida through the night.

The National Weather Service Miami reported that at least four tornadoes were visually confirmed across South Florida as of 2 p.m.

Traffic cams near Broward County caught one tornado making its way across Interstate 75 along Alligator Alley on Wednesday morning.

“Seek shelter NOW!” NWS tweeted along with a photo of the tornado.

The Category 4 storm is expected to make landfall near Tampa late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

Some Central and South Florida counties like Brevard, Osceola, Orange and Melbourne were under a Tornado Warning Wednesday afternoon.

NWS confirmed a “large” tornado moving through Wellington and a “large” multi-vortex tornado moving into Martin County around 5:30 p.m.

St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson posted on Facebook that a 10,000-square-foot building where patrol cars were parked was damaged by a tornado.

Pearson said no deputies were inside the building at the time and no injuries were reported.
