From the Field to the Fight: A Journey of Resilience

Keiko Honda continues to thrive in the face of adversity and hopes her journey inspires others

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Keiko Honda’s passion for dance began when she was 4 years old in her native Japan. Little did she know that her love for movement would take her across the world to Jacksonville, Florida, where she would fulfill a lifelong dream: becoming a cheerleader for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For six unforgettable seasons, Keiko graced the sidelines as part of The ROAR, radiating energy and positivity for her beloved team. But just before what would have been her final season, life threw her a challenge far greater than any she had faced before.

During a routine visit to Japan for a visa renewal, Keiko received devastating news—she had a high probability of breast cancer. Upon returning to the U.S., her diagnosis was confirmed, but fortunately, the cancer appeared to be at an early stage. Her doctor agreed to delay surgery so that Keiko could finish her last season with the Jaguars, a decision that would allow her to dance one last time before focusing on her health.

Keiko is no stranger to pushing boundaries. As an immigrant, she navigated cultural differences, language barriers, and visa challenges to pursue her dreams. Now, she faces another hurdle, battling cancer with the same determination and grace that she brought to the football field. Her goal? To survive, thrive, return to dancing, and inspire others with her resilience.

While Keiko has always been one to rely on her inner strength, the costs of cancer treatment have forced her to reach out for support. From surgery to chemotherapy, radiation, and ongoing hormone therapy, the financial burden is immense.

Despite these challenges, Keiko remains hopeful.

“I am very lucky that the cancer was caught early and that I was allowed to go through to the end of the season,” she said.

Keiko dreams of a full recovery and, someday, returning to the big stage as a cheerleader once again. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, and she continues to inspire those around her with her fighting spirit.
