JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A video circulating online shows three officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in an altercation with fans during the Georgia-Florida game Saturday.

In the video, viewers can see a fan on the ground as an officer hits them repeatedly and a witness yells, “Why are you punching him?”

Then, the camera turns to show another officer punching another fan.

From that angle, viewers can see the man grabbing the officer’s waist while being hit.

Crime and safety analyst Tom Hackney provided his perspective on the videos, saying he felt the officers followed protocol.

“From what I’ve seen here, the African American officer [is] using some of those closed fists, that’s within training,” Hackney said.

Regarding the other officer in the video, Hackney said, “I can’t really tell what level of resistance that is, [but] the subject looks like he’s covered his face...that officer is going to have to explain what those strikes are.”

The crime and safety analyst adds that for people to avoid incidents like this, they should avoid “active resistance.”

“[Active resistance is] where you’re pulling away from the officer, you snatch them away, you’re pushing their hands, anything like that. And it just kind of moves up from there,” he said.

In those instances, charges against the person resisting could elevate to battery on a law enforcement officer or resisting arrest with violence.
