JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In just over 24 hours, the first polls will close in this year’s election, and political analysts say a few early signals could offer Americans hints about which candidates are gaining the upper hand.
Key battleground states and demographic shifts might tip the scales, with three states, in particular, that will give people an insight into the political direction the country may take.

More than 70 million Americans have already cast their ballots after months of intense partisan divides and heated rhetoric.
As election night approaches, candidates and their campaigns are making their final pitches, and both sides are bracing for what could be a nail-biting finish. Although polling indicates a tight race, political analysts are keeping their eyes on a few crucial factors that may reveal early clues on Tuesday night.
According to Michael Binder, Director of the Public Opinion Research Lab at the University of North Florida, North Carolina’s early reporting could be significant.
Binder described North Carolina as a borderline swing state, where a close watch on margins could give insight into broader national trends.
Down-ballot races in states like Virginia and New York could also provide signals about party momentum.
“If you can look at the margins that Trump wins by in Florida, and how that relates to the partisan turnout. If he’s overperforming partisan turnout, that might be something that is good for Trump. If he is underperforming, that could be problematic on a national scale,” Binder said.

Rick Mullaney, Director of the Public Policy Institute at Jacksonville University, noted that reproductive rights could play a significant role in outcomes, especially in states where it’s on the ballot.
Mullaney suggested this issue may indicate shifting priorities among voters, but Pennsylvania remains a critical focus.
“And when you look at the path for Kamala to win, Pennsylvania is a big part of it. If you look at the path for Donald Trump to win, Pennsylvania is part of it. Pennsylvania, because of their state law, they don’t begin processing their ballots until Election Day and don’t tally them until polls close. If the race is as close as predicted, Pennsylvania’s count could stretch beyond election night due to mail-in ballots, which are largely Democratic,” said Rick Mullaney.

Analysts are also looking closely at urban and suburban areas across the industrial North and Southeast, where Democrats have made notable gains since 2020.
The big question remains: will Republicans break down the “Blue Wall,” or will Democrats hold the line?
With so many variables at play, election night could be both unpredictable and prolonged.
As analysts focus on these key states and issues, Americans will be watching closely to see who ultimately claims victory.
