Duval County supervisor of elections says he expected higher voter turnout for election

Jerry Holland said Duval County did hit record numbers for early voting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite reaching a little over 71% of voter turnout for the Primary Election in Duval County, the Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland said he was disappointed in the numbers.

Holland was hoping to get more than 75% voter turnout.

Poll workers across the city worked to prepare for the expected lines and voter traffic.

According to the election website, voter turnout was reported at 71.91% with all but one of the 160 precincts reporting.

“Overall, I was expecting a higher turnout. I thought this election was going to engage more voters versus what we saw in 2020, but about the same amount came out,” Holland said.

Holland said Duval County did hit record numbers for early voting.

“That was good,” Holland said. “It took pressure off Election Day, so we had a smooth Election Day with the expectation of that one location.”

Early on Tuesday, the Beaver Street Enterprise Center polling location received reports of a “suspicious package.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident and said the package was found outside the precinct.

All operations at the polling site resumed normal operations after a brief investigation.
