It’s the fourth year the all-female, world-class surfing contest has been in Jacksonville Beach.
Olivia Storrer was one of the surfers competing Saturday in the second round of the WSL Surfing.
The 15-year-old was a winner in her heat.
“This is always just a special event,” Storrer said. “I was just excited to surf today.”
The all-girl event helps surfers get points to qualify for the Women’s Championship Tour next year.
Many people sat on the sand Saturday morning to watch the competition.
This three-day surfing competition also includes volleyball, a flag football tournament and a small beach cleanup.
Lindsey Jacobellis, a Surf Girl ambassador and a Winter Olympic gold medalist said this event embodies more than just sports.
“This is not just a surf event,” Jacobellis said. This is a mentorship and we have women from all over the world coming to compete and then we have the Rising Tides Foundation coming to help these younger girls come into their own.”
Storrer said though she’s not ready to take her skills and compete in the world championship just yet, she likes coming here because it makes her better.
And she gets to practice being a role model for those who come after her.
“I think the younger generation really motivates me to be better and all the younger girls are getting so good so it pushes me to be better,” Storrer said.
The three-day event also has live music. On Saturday, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will perform and CeeLo Green will perform on Sunday.
