JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – Jacksonville Beach officials rolled out a survey Wednesday asking for the community’s input on the Urban Trail Project, a plan to add and widen sidewalks to make it safer for people to bike, walk, skate or run.
This project has been a controversial topic for some in Jacksonville Beach since public meetings were held in recent years.
Now, Parks and Recreation is asking residents to fill out a survey so the community can express how they feel about the Urban Trail Project.
In its simplest form, city officials say this project aims to create safer sidewalks and paths to parks and schools.
“It’s simply a widening of the sidewalk from five feet to eight feet,” Jason Phitides, Parks and Recreation director, said. “It’s a trail that’s going to connect our parks and our schools together and get people safely around the town of Jax Beach.”
Jeff Albertson lives near Pocianna Boulevard and Jacksonville Drive where there is a regular five-foot sidewalk and also the new eight-foot sidewalk.
“Big benefit,” he said.
Carly Donnell said more sidewalks are needed.
“I have young kids, and when I take them on the stroller or whatnot, we have to go on the street here to go to the gas station or the bakery surf, which is wherever, especially with this new restaurant opening,” Donnell said.
Phitides is hoping to get as much feedback as possible before the survey results are presented in early December or January.
