The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that officers conducted a traffic stop on North Main Street, where evidence of illegal drug activity was discovered. This led to a drug investigation, during which passenger Felix Lamar Turner, 56, was found in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Turner was arrested without incident and transported to a local jail.

While awaiting entry to the facility, Turner suffered what appeared to be a medical emergency, JSO said. Its staff administered aid and called the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department for further assistance.

Turner was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m.

According to JSO, preliminary findings showed no signs of altercation or use of force during the arrest or transportation. The agency added that its Cold Case and Crime Scene Units have launched investigations, and the Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an independent review to determine the cause of death.

Turner faced charges of possessing a controlled substance, possessing drug paraphernalia, and having an open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

JSO emphasized that the investigation is active and ongoing.
