Growth in St. Johns County highlighted by Bass Pro Shops opening

Store openings sparks excitement and concerns as St. Johns County grapples with traffic and infrastructure challenges

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The grand opening of Bass Pro Shops in St. Johns County is highlighting the region’s rapid growth.

Located near International Golf Parkway and World Golf Village, the new store joins other major retailers, including Costco and Buc-ee’s, transforming the area into a commercial hub.

John Pike, a St. Johns County resident of 21 years, reflects on the transformation. “When we moved here, there wasn’t even a Publix. Now we have Walmart, Bass Pro, and more,” he said.

While Pike views the development as a sign of progress, he acknowledges the strain it places on traffic. “Getting in and out of this area can be tight,” he added.

Local officials are taking steps to address these challenges. During a county commission meeting, County Commissioner Ann Taylor acknowledged resident concerns about traffic congestion. “I hear all the time from residents about what could be done,” she said.

Kim Kendall, a representative at the meeting, emphasized the urgency by advocating for specific infrastructure projects. She highlighted two proposals for traffic relief near Buc-ee’s, ranging from $5 million to $40 million, urging the commission to prioritize adding U-turns to the light by the Buc-ee’s, and a more comprehensive ramp design.

County Chair Sarah Arnold responded cautiously. “We need more information to ensure funding at the state and federal levels,” she said, suggesting updates could come during December’s legislative priorities update.

St. Johns County is also undergoing broader road improvements. A widening project at State Road 16 and I-95 is underway, with completion expected in 2025. During the meeting, Joe McInerney presented data showing that nearly half of the county’s roads exceed capacity, underscoring the need for long-term solutions.

Despite the traffic, Pike believes the changes are necessary. “These things are needed out here,” he said, expressing optimism about the county’s future.
