JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Northside woman stepped into her backyard to walk her dog, only to return and find a wanted man hiding in her house.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said 39-year-old Michael Summers was wanted for stealing a car, and according to an eyewitness, he wrecked the car and was in search of a place to hide.
According to JSO, while officers were searching the perimeter, they received a report of a burglary from a woman who said Summers was in her home.
According to the police report, the victim stated she unlocked the back door of her residence to let her dog out. She brought her dog back inside but did not lock the back door. The victim was in the dining room of her home when she observed the suspect inside her home.
“She was in her kitchen and then she realized someone was in her home, she saw his face, and that’s when she said she yelled real loud, and he fled out of the home,” the eyewitness told News4JAX.
Officers and K-9 units tracked Summers to a construction site, where he was found hiding under equipment covered by a tarp.
Video from the arrest shows officers ordering Summers to surrender. Police said a K-9 bit Summers on the leg before he was taken into custody.
“This kind of thing brings neighbors closer together,” said the eyewitness. “We have to look out for each other.”
According to Duval County court records, Summers has been arrested multiple times since 1986.
Police said he made incoherent statements during his arrest and required medical treatment before being booked into the Duval County jail.
