JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The new concept design for Metropolitan Park was unveiled at Wednesday’s open house, which was the last event for public opinion before the final design is released in winter 2025.
With a location next to EverBank Stadium along the river walk, the city has long planned to revitalize the park.

The design in its current form is inspired by the Gullah Geechee tradition of basket weaving, to pay homage to the descendants living in the Out East neighborhood. The proposed design decides to weave together three park experiences: the riverfront, the central lawn and Bay Street.
Here are some of the features that are being considered:
The Parking Grove
The project proposes adding 60 new parking spots along Bay Street, integrating them with a grove of trees. The area is designed to provide space for food trucks and vendors, as well as shade during tailgates.
Tailgate Plaza
The Tailgate Plaza includes a picnic pavilion, a performance pavilion and a water play area. It also includes ‘The Ramble’ which features garden rooms and hillside play.
Performance Lawn
With Metro Park being a hub for festivals, such as Jacksonville Jazz Fest, the performance lawn will be shifted north to allow easier access from Bay Street.
Discovery Green
Next to the Performance Lawn, alongside WJCT, is the Discovery Green. The small lawn will be equipped with play features, as well as picnic areas.
Braided Riverwalk
The city says the Braided Riverwalk is going to be a “highly unique experience.” In addition to the regular boardwalk, the concept design shows an extended dock, as well as a canopy walk. The canopy walk is raised up so visitors can enjoy a stroll through the treetops.
The revitalization project is part of the larger Jacksonville Riverfront vision, as plans for the new stadium, Jaguars headquarters and Four Seasons Hotel are underway.
