‘We truly never know’: Clay County residents speak out after escape room owner discovered with child sex abuse materials

John Nicholls appeared in court Saturday, facing 10 counts of CSAM possession

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – A months-long investigation into a 63-year-old Clay County escape room owner recently led to his arrest.

On Friday, deputies said they found “numerous” electronic devices at John Nicholls' Fleming Island home and his Locked In Escape Room business in Middleburg.

The investigation was launched after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received concerning tips about child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

On Saturday, Nicholls appeared in front of a Clay County judge for his alleged crimes after search warrants were served at his home and business, where investigators say they found “several electronic devices.”

According to court records, his bond is just over $750,000.

Several News4JAX viewers have shared their thoughts on the arrest. One viewer said, “I hate it for the family, and victims in the pics because they did nothing to incur the impending wake of destruction.”

Another said, “We’ve known him for years. Haven’t seen him since before he opened the escape room. But, like you, shocked is an understatement. We truly never know what goes on behind closed doors.”

The investigation into this matter is ongoing. If you have any tips related to this case, call 904-264-6512.
