JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The City of Jacksonville announced the opening of one of its warming centers Monday night as the area braces for freezing temperatures and wind chills.

A Freeze Warning and Cold Weather Advisory are in effect for Duval County starting Monday night through Tuesday morning.
In response, the Emergency Preparedness Division has activated the Warming Center Contingency Plan. The plan states that when temperatures reach 27 degrees or colder the City of Jacksonville Warming Center will be open overnight to residents who do not have access to adequate heat. Accordingly, it will be open:
The shelter will open Jan. 6 from 9 p.m. to Jan. 7 until 9 a.m. at The Legends Center located at 5130 Soutel Drive in Jacksonville.

JTA buses will help transport vulnerable individuals to the Legends Center, which will be staffed and have water available onsite. Residents utilizing the Warming Center should bring the following items:
- Air mattresses, blankets, pillows, or other bedding
- Snacks and medication
- Games, toys, and books
- Hygiene and comfort items
Additionally, all COJ Libraries and COJ Community Centers will be open during regular business hours and serve as Warming Centers across Duval County. More information can be found at: jaxready.com/StayWarmJax.
The city’s non-profit partners at area shelters are also providing cold-weather shelter services to the homeless population. These shelters include:

- Mission House, 465 11th Ave. N, Jacksonville Beach, 32250, overnight operations at St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal – Parish Hall, 1150 5th Street N, Jacksonville Beach, 32250 (Note: this facility will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, January 7-9)

- 5455 Springfield Blvd. 32208 – Women and Children
- Trinity Rescue Mission, 622 W. Union Street, 32202
