Starting Monday, Camden County voters will be able to cast an early ballot in a special election on whether or not the county should continue a sales tax that funds a variety of local projects.

Georgia law allows counties to enact a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST. It’s an optional one percent sales tax, and the money it raises can only be used for capital projects, not routine county operational expenses or other services.

Camden County’s current SPLOST was renewed in 2019, and runs through June 30. A special election to continue it is set for March 18, so that the county and cities can plan in advance for funding, with no lapse. The SPLOST would not increase the sales tax, it would continue it at the current rate, which is a total of seven percent.

Camden County officials and officials in each municipality in the county have already identified projects that the SPLOST would fund, as explained on the county website. They include a public safety complex, county ambulances, road and drainage projects, and more.

County officials have already held two open house meetings so residents can learn about the sales tax referendum. The third and final open house will be on Tuesday, March 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Woodbine Opry, at 205 Camden Avenue in Woodbine.
