CHARLTON COUNTY, Ga. – Several Georgia counties are cleaning up after a storm moved through the area, and while residents across Southeast Georgia are no strangers to strong storms, the system still packed a punch.
The aftermath of severe weather that moved through Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida on Sunday left behind some damage and debris in Charlton County.
The scene was similar to other instances when major storms or hurricanes move through the area. Plenty of small debris was scattered along the roads, while tree branches and limbs littered people’s yards.

“We had some damage in the north end of the county and the Winokur community,” explained Charlton County Sheriff Robert Phillips. “We had one house that was hit. A section of the house was torn loose.”
The sheriff adds that much of the damage was concentrated in small areas while plenty of loose debris and water accumulated in other areas.
“We’re fortunate we didn’t have any more problems than we had,” Sheriff Phillips said. “Mother Nature can be rough on us at times, so we have to be prepared and know how to protect ourselves from harm.”
One woman who spoke to News4JAX off-camera says her shed was flipped on its roof during the worst of the storm, saying she was inside her house when the storm happened and had no idea it was occurring until she stepped outside.
She says there’s much to clean up.

County officials say two homes were damaged during the storm, and anyone else with damage is encouraged to contact the county Emergency Management Agency along with their insurance company.
