DeSantis visits Idaho, Montana to push for balanced budget amendment to US Constitution

BOISE, Idaho – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis held two news conferences Monday, one in Idaho and another one in Montana to discuss the importance of advancing the “Balanced Budget Amendment” to the U.S. Constitution.

On Monday morning DeSantis joined Gov. Brad Little in Boise to urge lawmakers to consider a resolution to amend the U.S. Constitution to require a Balanced Budget Amendment.

DeSantis said amending the U.S. Constitution under Article V would allow states to help balance the federal budget and address fiscal irresponsibility in the federal government.

“We have an opportunity to do something. I think the Founding Fathers understood that wherever the seat of government was going to end up, and they didn’t know it was going to be in Washington DC, when they did the federal, when they did the Constitution, they knew that there would be a danger where we just go off the rails. And they knew they needed to empower the states to be able to take corrective action. So, that’s really what a Balanced Budget Amendment would do. It would force them to make better decisions, and it would ultimately avert our country from really having a fiscal collapse,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis said the plan needs the support of 34 states to trigger Article V.

On Jan. 11, Republican governors sent a letter to Congress offering to help Elon Musk and President Donald Trump in their cost-cutting, government efficiency efforts to achieve the goal of a balanced federal budget.

“Finding inefficiencies in the federal government is an important first step towards the ultimate goal of balancing the federal budget. Washington needs to remove wasteful spending and balance its budget to achieve long-term fiscal stability, promote economic growth, and protect our national security,” the letter reads.
