CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said it was investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Fleming Island.
The sheriff’s office said the shooting happened Tuesday afternoon at the Cobblestone at Eagle Harbor condo complex off CR-220, not far from Highway 17.
Investigators said the deputies responded after they received a call from a relative about a suicidal woman around 4:15 p.m.
“When the deputies pulled into the parking lot and got out of their vehicles, a woman approached them pretty quickly with a gun in her hand. Two deputies shot the woman,” Sheriff Michelle Cook said.
Cook said that before the deputies arrived, they were informed of the woman’s intentions, but they never got a chance to reason with her because she acted so quickly in a threatening manner to the deputies.
“We strive to de-escalate,” Cook said. ”We strive to bring the person down and get them the help they need, but unfortunately, in this case, because of the way she was holding the gun and walking towards the deputies, they really had no other option.”
CCSO said a suspect was taken to a local hospital, and the deputy was not injured.
