Local Catholic leader explains why Pope Francis’ funeral will be different

Pope Francis’ death is setting off a centuries-old orchestrated series of events.

The 88-year-old beloved Pontiff died Monday after a lengthy battle with double pneumonia.

He died of heart failure and a stroke.

The funeral for the 266th bishop of Rome is scheduled for Saturday at 4 a.m. It will differ dramatically from those of his predecessors.

His holiness made changes to his funeral rites last year that underscore his humility and will do away with much of the traditional pomp and circumstance.

For instance, he will not be laid to rest in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica, but instead in a 5th-century church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Santa Maria Maggiore.

Bishop Emeritus Felipe de Jesús Estévez of the Diocese of St. Augustine joined News4JAX anchor Bruce Hamilton on The Morning Show and said the changes made by Pope Francis reflect his humility.
