Jacksonville law firm holds 9/11 remembrance

Law firm remembers one of their own by giving to others

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Wednesday marks 12 years since the terror attack on New York City and the Pentagon -- an attack that claimed more than 3,000 lives -- among the men and women who died were people who gave in order to save others.

Holland & Knight, a law firm in Jacksonville remembers one of their own by giving to others as well.

Glen Winnick rushed to the Twin Towers as a volunteer firefighter.

"Glen would be very glad to see we're doing this in his honor," said Daniel Bean, Executive Partner at Holland and Knight.

Honoring that particular partner of Holland & Knight is the point for Saturday's "Day of Service and Remembrance" event.

But to honor Winnick, it's an event that doesn't involve ribbons or balloons. It's about serving the community and in this instance, at Philosophy Park on the Eastside.

The focus of Saturday's service project was the Police Athletic League, which meant a lot to Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford.

"You know, I have people ask me all the time, 'Sheriff, what can we do to help fight crime in the community?' And this is one way to do it," said Rutherford. "Holland and Knight, we didn't have to ask them. They didn't have to ask. They knew what to do, and so, they're over here, really helping us make a difference in this community."

People like Winnick made a difference to people like Heidi Jones. She survived the 9/11 attack and can never forget the heroes from that day.

"Very fortunate, I'm very fortunate to be here. I'm happy to be here," Jones said. "I'm standing here trying to do good things in that memory for those people who aren't here, so I'm very fortunate."

Holland & Knight offices worldwide organized the national day of service. This is the third year of their program.
