JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ribault High School, Ribault Middle School and Sallye B. Mathis Elementary School were locked down Friday morning as a precaution after a school police officer heard a gunshot off campus.
The lockdowns were lifted by noon and all students and staff were safe, officials said.

Police responded to the area but they could find no indication of anyone shot in the neighborhood and school officials said there was never a threat to campus, but they temporarily put the schools on lockdown as a precaution.
A letter sent home to parents of Ribault High School students indicated that the lockdown was also related to an incident on campus in which several people entered campus without permission. Those people were detained, officials said.
The letter said the school was on lockdown for 30 minutes before officers said there was no longer an immediate danger to campus.
"Thankfully, students and staff remained safe throughout the incident and normal school operations resumed for the remainder of the day," the letter said.
Anyone with concerns is asked to call Principal Christopher Jackson at 904-924-3092.
