Angela Corey unopposed for re-election

Chuck Fletcher to run against Public Defender Matt Shirk

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Angela Corey, who is currently in the national spotlight with the George Zimmerman second-degree murder case -- is going to spend another four years as state attorney.

Corey on Friday won a new term after no one stepped forward to challenge the Republican in this year's election. Qualifying ended at noon.

Corey was first elected in 2008 as state attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit that includes Clay, Duval and Nassau counties.

The 57-year-old prosecutor is known for her tough tactics, locking up criminals for long sentences and not negotiating easily on plea bargains.

Gov. Rick Scott appointed Corey in late March to oversee the investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin.

Matt Shirk, winding up his first four-year term as public defender for the Fourth Circuit, has drawn an opponent.  Jacksonville defense attorney Chuck Fletcher has qualified to run in the race.

Fletcher has represented several high-profile defendants and has been vocal about how Shirk's office has handled the defense 14-year-old Cristian Fernandez, whose first-degree murder case is pending.

Both Shirk and Fletcher are Republicans.
